Volcanoes & Lava
When we got to where the lava is flowing we found out that it
had formed a lava tube and was flowing directly into the ocean. This made it extremely
hazardous to get very close as there was no surface flows. This was the biggest disappointment
of the trip to me. We were, however able to see the lava flow into the ocean
and create this awesome (and also noxious, dangerous and annoying) plume of
steam & smoke.
Here you can see how it looked as the daylight receded.

This picture is noteworthy because of the plume in the background,
the wonderful black sand beach, the fantastic lava cliffs and of course, my shirt!

This road gets covered up on a regular basis. This flow was a
few weeks old. Some people
actually live further in in areas that got spared (for now). It's rained for about
10 minutes while we were here.

Here is a picture I took when I hiked out to an area that was
off limits. You see how the cliff had just subsided. Apparently when this happened
there were a whole bunch of people standing on and near it and not all of them
are here today. You can see the smoke plume in the background.

Above
is a crater that was filled with red hot molten lava about 60 years ago. It was
like that for over 100 years.
